How to Obtain a Library Card:

For North Lawrence County Residents:

Library card applications are available at the library. New cards will be mailed.  Any child under 14 years of age (or not yet in high school) must have his/her application signed by a parent or guardian. After receiving your card in the mail, sixty items may be checked out on your card. If you are under 18 years of age, you do not have to show identification to obtain a library card.

ADULT LIBRARY CARDS

Residents and property owners in the Bedford Public Library tax district may apply for a library card. The Bedford Public Library tax district is the area of Lawrence County north of the White River.

Persons over 18 who apply for a Library Card must show identification and proof of current address. Acceptable documents (showing current address) are listed below:

• Valid Indiana Driver’s License or State ID card
• Printed checks with current address
• Bank statement, issued during the past 60 days
• Vehicle registration
• Current property tax statement

The Library reserves the right to request picture ID with current address if the need arises.


OUT OF DISTRICT:
Residents of Lawrence County south of the White River may apply for a Bedford Public Library card if they have a valid library card with no outstanding fees from the Mitchell Community Public Library.

Persons living outside Lawrence County must have a current library card from their home library and a Public Library Access Card (PLAC) to apply for a Bedford Public Library card. Please contact the Library for current PLAC fee.


Public Access Card (PLAC)

Persons living outside Lawrence county must have a Public Library Access Card (PLAC) to use the Bedford Public Library.

Q. What is a Public Library Access Card (PLAC)?

A. PLAC is Indiana’s statewide public library borrowing card. It allows individuals to borrow directly from any public library outside their home library district.

Q. Who is eligible?

A. Individuals with a valid resident library card in good standing from their home library are eligible for a PLAC. They must be residents or real property taxpayers of their home library’s taxing district.

Q. What is the cost?

A. The statewide fee is set annually by state law and announced by the Indiana State Library.

Q. Where can individuals get a PLAC?

A. PLAC is available at any public library in Indiana.

Q. When does a PLAC expire?

A. A PLAC expires one year from the date of purchase.

Q. Can a PLAC be used as a family card?

A. No, a PLAC is issued as an individual card.

To get a PLAC:

     Go to the Library Circulation Desk.

     Bring your home library card.

     Show identification with your name and current address (valid forms of ID listed above).

     Pay PLAC fee with cash or personal check.


Responsibilities of Library Card Ownership:

You must have you library card with you to check out materials.

You must inform us if you have a change of name, address, or phone number. Your card will be updated at no charge.

You are responsible for the care and return of all items checked out on your card.

You are responsible for notifying the library if your card is lost or stolen. If not reported, you are responsible for materials checked out on your card.

Do not loan your card to friends... you are responsible for all items checked out on your card.
 

Replacement Card Cost

Charges for lost cards are:
Adult cards - $2.00
Children's/Young Adult cards - $1.00
 

Loan Periods for Library Materials

All materials are loaned for 21 days, except for one-week DVDs in Adult services.
 

Fines and Fees

A fine of 20 cents per item per day is charged when materials are returned late. If you lose your date due slip, please call us to check the due date. Please return materials on time so they will be available for others to use.

You will be notified of overdue items by Telecirc, the Library's automated circulation service, e-mail, or by mail.

Accounts with a balance due over $25.00 may be submitted to a collection agency.


Lost and Damaged Materials

You will be charged for items checked out on your card that are lost or damaged. These fees will be used to replace the lost/damaged materials.


Policy for DVDs and VHS

You must be at least 18 years old to check out DVDs marked "18+" from the Adult Floor.


Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

The Bedford Public Library offers Interlibrary Loan services through resource sharing with cooperating libraries. You may borrow books and periodical articles from other libraries through the Bedford Public Library. In order to request an Interlibrary Loan, the desired item must NOT be owned by the Bedford Public Library. Reciprocal Borrowers will need to request Interlibrary Loan items from their "Home" library.
