Going Green(er) at BPL

We know it is important to be good stewards of the earth. Our commitment to reduce our use of resources can be seen in the steps we have already taken. (See list below.) We are open to suggestions of more ways to conserve resources. To encourage you to share ideas, we are offering a gift pack of videos and books that will be given to the person who suggests an idea that we can implement. The winner will be selected at random from all ideas that we can actually use.

Current steps we are taking:

  • Changing to a paperless electronic newsletter
  • Sending e-mail notices and using a phone messaging system for notifications concerning reserves and overdue materials--saving staff time, paper and printing costs, and postage
  • Donating all old newspapers to the Humane Society for cage lining
  • Recycling paper, cans, toner cartridges, and cardboard
  • Reusing materials like paper towel rolls, bottles, cans, and fabrics for craft programs
  • Changing to printer fonts that conserve ink and printing on both sides of paper
  • Using Energy efficient lights bulbs
  • Presenting programs on recycling to students in the local elementary schools and at the Library

The Library has an excellent collection of books, videos, and other materials to encourage recycling. Read about the many ways you can reduce, reuse, and recycle. Start your own Green Campaign today!

Project:  Giving Tree!

Many of us are enjoying the late summer heat by staying indoors. This indoor down time may afford time for people who knit or crochet to make hats, mittens, or scarves to donate to the Library’s annual Giving Tree project. During the holiday season, the Giving Tree collects new hats, mittens, gloves, and scarves, as well as new children’s books. Just before Christmas, Hoosier Uplands distributes these donated items to local low-income children.

New handmade items are greatly appreciated, both by the Library and by the lucky children who receive them.
