BEDFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY

Children/Young Adult Services

Children/Young Adult Services provide print and audiovisual materials for children and young adults. Materials are available for even the youngest children to help them begin learning basic concepts. A collection of materials for parents and educators is also located on this floor. Full reference service is available in this department.

Programs Throughout the year a variety of programs are presented by the Children's/Young Adult Department. Every program presented by the Children's and Young Adult Department is free of charge.

TumbleBookLibrary is an online collection of TumbleBooks, animated, talking picture books which teach kids the joy of reading in a format they love. TumbleBooks are created by taking existing picture books, adding animation, sound, music and narration to produce an electronic picture book which you can read, or have read to you. The TumbleBook Library collection is accessed on-line from every computer in the library with Internet connection, or from home through a direct link on the library website.

E-Mail Reference questions will be answered by the reference staff.  If you would like to send a reference question to us, please click here for a Reference form. Please allow 24 hours for a response.

Materials Request  Books that are not in the collection may be requested at the library either through Interlibrary Loan or by using our Materials Request Form.  An online version of the Materials Request Form may be found by clicking here.

Dial-A-Story is direct access to stories, which enables children and families of the community to dial a special number and hear a short story. Stories will change on a weekly basis. The stories are available 24 hours a day, year round. The stories are professionally prerecorded and the average running time of the stories are 2.5 to 4.5 minutes. The special number for Dial-A-Story is 278-5246. The service is fun and free to the callers.

Computer Services There are five computers in the department which feature Internet, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and edutainment software.  You must have your own library card with you to use the computers. Library staff can help start a program, but cannot provide tutoring or hands-on assistance. CYA computers will be shut down 15 minutes before the rest of the library.  There are no charges for using the computers. All computers are connected to a laser printer. The first five sheets of paper printed are free; after that the cost is 10 cents per page.  Internet Policy.
